SETSAIL

The Holocaust as a History and Memory is a SET SAIL seminar course currently offered at the New College of Florida. The course covers many major components related to the Holocaust, such as why it happened, how we should remember, commemorate, and study it, and whether and how we should engage with those who deny it occurred.

This seminar was just recently taught by Dr. David Harvey, a professor at a New College since 2000. The history of modern France and Germany is Professor Harvey’s main area of study. He is the author of The French Enlightenment and Its Others: The Mandarin, the Savage, and the Invention of the Human Sciences (2005), Beyond Enlightenment: Occultism and Politics in Modern France (2005), and Constructing Class and Nationality in Alsace, 1830-1945 (2001). (2012).

As a SETSAIL course, Caitlyn Sanderson, who works at New College Foundation in advancement, worked alongside professor Harvey administering the objectives of a SETSAIL course. Particularly, a SETSAIL course aims at assisting New College’s first-year students in achieving success through the deliberate growth and reflection of mentorship networks, educational agency, and the development of transferable academic skills.

Students gained firsthand knowledge of how historians compile, contrast, and assess historical data throughout this course by utilizing the Fagin Holocaust Collection’s resources in the NCF library. Moreover, students get the chance to converse with other students on books, articles, movies, and museum displays on the Holocaust. This way students can, not only effectively communicate the Holocaust’s historical events, but can also discuss its casualties and contingency.
